Baba

Baba, you too much. A Pidgin praise song about a dead boy raised on the road and a storm told to lie down.

Michael CU. Out now, and track 9 on the album Daalu.

Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.

Jeremiah 32:17, King James Version

Baba, you too much

If you are Nigerian, you already know what this means. When someone does something so good that ordinary thanks cannot hold it, you say, you too much. It means you are beyond measure. You have done more than I can carry.

Baba means father. So the chorus of this song is a Nigerian way of saying what the Psalms say. Father, You are too great. What You did for me burst my brain. How can I ever thank You?

The song is in Pidgin, and it tells two stories from the life of Jesus the way we would tell them in a compound at night.

The widow's son: no cry again

The first verse is from Luke 7:11 to 17. Jesus is walking into a town called Nain when He meets a funeral coming out. A widow is following the body of her only son. The whole town is with her. Nobody has anything to say.

Jesus looks at the mother and says, weep not. Then He touches the bier, the wooden frame they were carrying the body on, and speaks one word. Young man, I say unto thee, arise. The boy sits up and begins to talk, and Jesus gives him back to his mother.

The Bible says fear came on all of them, and they glorified God, saying God has visited His people. Whole town start to shout.

The storm: who be this man?

The second verse brings together two nights on the Sea of Galilee.

In Mark 4:35 to 41, a great storm fills the boat with water while Jesus sleeps. The disciples wake Him shouting, Master, carest Thou not that we perish? He stands up and speaks to the wind. Peace, be still. The sea goes flat. And the disciples, terrified, ask each other, what manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him? Who be this man?

In Matthew 14 and John 6, the disciples are rowing against the wind at night when they see Jesus walking to them on the water. John 6:21 adds a detail that most people miss. As soon as they took Him into the boat, the boat was immediately at the land where they were going. Dem reach house.

Nothing dey hard You

The bridge says it in Pidgin, but the Bible said it first. Jeremiah 32:17. Ah Lord God, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power, and there is nothing too hard for Thee. Luke 1:37 says with God nothing shall be impossible.

And if na You talk am, e done happen. Psalm 33:9. He spake, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood fast.

Then comes the dance. Make I dance for Baba. David danced before the Lord with all his might in 2 Samuel 6:14, and Psalm 30:11 says God turned mourning into dancing. That is exactly what happened in Nain.

A few Pidgin words, for readers outside Nigeria

You too much means you are amazing, beyond measure. E burst my brain means it blew my mind. Pikin means child. Dem means they. Holler means shout. No gree means refused. Waka means walk. Who be this man means who is this man. Nothing dey hard You means nothing is too hard for You. Make I dance means let me dance.

Baba appears in another song of mine too. Read about it on the page for The Living God.

What the song is about

Baba is a Pidgin praise song. It retells two miracles of Jesus. A dead boy is raised on the road to his own burial. A storm is silenced on the sea. Then the song turns to the only response that makes sense. Thank You. Nothing is too hard for You. Make I dance.

Baba is the album's Pidgin thanksgiving song, made for the offering dance. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.

A prayer of thanksgiving for miracles

Baba, You raised a dead boy on the road to his own burial. You told the storm to lie down and it obeyed. Nothing is too hard for You. Thank You for every miracle in my own life. I will dance before You with all my might. In Jesus' name, Amen.
