And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
Psalm 9:10, King James Version
Why does God have so many names?
In the Bible, a name is not a label. It is a description. People named God after what He did for them. Hagar met Him alone in the desert and called Him the God who sees me. Abraham watched Him provide a ram on the mountain and called Him the LORD will provide.
So every name of God is a testimony. Somebody went through something, and this is what they found God to be. When you call His names, you are standing on their stories.
Igbo people understand this. Our names for God work the same way. You can read about some of them on the pages for Daalu and Ebube Dike.
The names of God in this song, and what they mean
- Yahweh
- The LORD. The personal name God gave Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3:14 and 15. It comes from I AM WHO I AM. He is the God who simply is.
- Adonai
- Lord and Master. The name of the One you bow to.
- Elohim
- God the Creator. The first name of God in the Bible, in Genesis 1:1. He spoke, and everything stood.
- El Shaddai
- God Almighty. The name God used with Abraham in Genesis 17:1. Nothing slips through His hands.
- El Elyon
- God Most High. Melchizedek blessed Abraham by this name in Genesis 14. No throne is higher.
- El Roi
- The God who sees me. Hagar gave God this name in Genesis 16:13, alone and running in the wilderness. He saw her in the hidden place.
- Jehovah Jireh
- The LORD will provide. Abraham named the mountain this in Genesis 22:14, when God provided the ram.
- Jehovah Rapha
- The LORD who heals. Exodus 15:26.
- Jehovah Nissi
- The LORD my banner. Moses built an altar with this name after victory in Exodus 17:15.
- Jehovah Shammah
- The LORD is there. The name of God's city in Ezekiel 48:35. Wherever He is, that is home.
- Immanuel
- God with us. Promised in Isaiah 7:14 and fulfilled in Matthew 1:23. He did not send another. He came Himself.
- Ancient of Days
- Daniel saw Him seated on the throne by this name in Daniel 7:9. Before time, and after it.
- Alpha and Omega
- The first and the last, the beginning and the end. Revelation 22:13.
- King of Kings and Lord of Lords
- The name written on His robe in Revelation 19:16.
- Abba
- Father. The word Jesus prayed in Gethsemane in Mark 14:36, and the word Romans 8:15 says the Spirit puts in our mouths. Of all His names, this is the one He lets us use like children.
A note on Jehovah. The Hebrew name of God is written with four letters, YHWH. Jehovah is an older English way of saying it, and Yahweh is closer to the original. Both point to the same God.
What the song is about
Call His Name is a roll call. It moves through the Hebrew names of God one after another, each line a reason to praise. Then it climbs to His highest titles. Ancient of Days. Alpha and Omega. King of Kings.
And right at the top, it turns around. All of that, and He still lets me call Him Abba. The God with every title in heaven answers to Father.
Call His Name is the album's roll call of the names of God. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.
A prayer using the names of God
Yahweh, You are the God who is. Jehovah Jireh, provide what I need. Jehovah Rapha, heal what is broken in me. El Roi, You see me even in the hidden place. Immanuel, thank You for coming near. And Abba, thank You for letting me call You Father. In Jesus' name, Amen.
