I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works.
Psalm 139:14, King James Version
Am I enough? The question many of us carry
Look at your friend. He came first. So what happened to you?
Many of us heard some version of that sentence as children. In the compound, in the classroom, at the dinner table. Our parents and teachers meant it as a push. They wanted us to do well. But a child does not hear a push. A child hears a verdict. You are not enough.
And that verdict does not stay in the classroom. It grows up with you. It follows you into the office, into your marriage, into church. You get the job, the house, the car, and the voice is still there. You keep proving yourself to a crowd that is no longer watching.
If you have ever lain awake asking God whether you are enough, this song is for you.
What the Bible says about being enough
There is no verse that says the words you are enough. But the Bible answers the question again and again, and it answers it from God's side, not ours.
Psalm 139:14. David says he is fearfully and wonderfully made. Not average. Not a disappointment. Made with care by the One who knows him best.
Jeremiah 1:5. God tells Jeremiah that He knew him before He formed him in the womb. That is where the bridge of this song comes from. Before anyone judged you, before your mother knew you, God knew you.
Ephesians 2:10. We are His workmanship. You do not become valuable by what you produce. You are valuable because of who made you.
2 Corinthians 12:9. My grace is sufficient for you. This is the honest answer. On our own, none of us is enough. That is exactly why grace exists. We are enough because He is enough, and because we belong to Him.
The song says it in one line. Not because of what I have done, but because of whose I am.
What the song is about
Lord, Am I Enough follows one life from a barefoot boy with a folded report card to a grown man in a suit with his name on the door. The boy was compared and found wanting. The man has everything people call success, and none of it reaches the place that still hurts.
Then, in the quiet, God answers. He calls him by name. He tells him he was shaped by His own hands, and that he was never measured by what people said. The song turns from a question into a celebration. It ends with a call and response that any congregation can shout back. Who said I'm not enough? That's a lie.
Lord, Am I Enough is one of the most personal songs on the album. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.
A prayer for anyone who feels they are not enough
Lord, You know the voices I have carried since I was a child. Silence every word that told me I was not enough. Remind me that You formed me with Your own hands and called me Yours before anyone judged me. Let me rest in what Christ has done, not in what I can prove. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Lord, Am I Enough lyrics
IntroFather...
There is a question I have carried all my life
Verse 1Barefoot in the compound, red earth upon my knee
Report card in my pocket, folded small as it could be
"Look at your friend, he came first, so what happened to you?"
I was only seven, and I believed that it was true
They said "that child won't go far," I heard it like a song
I sang it to myself for years, I sang it all night long
Every ruler in that classroom came up short on me
So I grew into the shape of what they said I'd be
PrechorusAnd I've been running, running
Trying to outrun that voice
Smiling in the daylight
Crying without noise
ChorusLord, am I enough?
When the house is quiet and it's only You and me
Lord, am I enough?
Still that little child with the dust upon his knee
Father, tell me, am I enough?
Is there any love in heaven big enough for me?
Verse 2Now I wear the suit and tie, my name is on the door
A wife who holds me when I'm tired, my children on the floor
They run to me at evening singing "Daddy, you're the best"
But the praise just slides right off me, and it never comes to rest
I have the job, I have the house, I have the car and key
But the boy inside the man still asks what's wrong with me
Every trophy on the shelf says look how far you've come
But a trophy cannot tell me who I am or where I'm from
PrechorusSo I keep on proving, proving
To a crowd that isn't there
Lord, I'm tired of pretending
Won't You meet me in this prayer
ChorusLord, am I enough?
When the house is quiet and it's only You and me
Lord, am I enough?
Still that little child with the dust upon his knee
Father, tell me, am I enough?
Is there any love in heaven big enough for me?
BridgeThen in the stillness, softer than the rain
A voice I never earned came and called me by my name
"Child, before they judged you, before your mother knew
I shaped you with My own hands, and I was proud of you
The cross has paid the price that no one else could pay
You were never measured by the things that people say"
And He whispered...
You are enough
My child, you are enough
Final chorusI am enough!
Not because of what I've done, but because of whose I am
I am enough!
Washed and chosen, loved and covered by the Lamb
I am enough!
Every word that held me down, Jesus, You have set me free
I am enough!
That child with dust upon his knee is dancing now in me
OutroWho said I'd never make it?
(That's a lie!)
Who said I'm not enough?
(That's a lie!)
Jesus called my name
(I am enough!)
My Father called my name
(I am enough!)
I am enough
I am enough
EndingThank You, Father
