But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31, King James Version
He didn't come with horns. He came with a contract.
Temptation rarely looks evil. It looks reasonable. It comes with a smile, a fast track and a promise that nobody has to know the details. Everybody is doing it. That is just how it works.
This song is a gospel rap about that moment. Holding the plate. Pen over the date. The voice in your ear making perfect sense. And the decision to put it down and walk out of the room.
How temptation really works
The second verse describes temptation the way the Bible does. Not as one big leap, but as a slow walk.
2 Corinthians 11:14. Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. That is why the song says, that's how you know it's him. He's always reasonable.
James 1:14 and 15. Every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death. It starts small. Something you can explain away. Then it comes back for a little bit more.
Genesis 3. The first temptation was a piece of fruit and a reasonable question. The Bible never actually calls it an apple, but the plate in this song is the same plate. Take a bite.
Matthew 4. Even Jesus was offered the fast track. All the kingdoms of the world, without the cross. He said no.
Romans 6:16. You become the servant of whatever you obey. Or as the song puts it, what rules you, first it feeds you.
How to resist temptation
The honest answer in this song is not willpower. The strength don't come from gritting your teeth.
1 Corinthians 10:13. God will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but will with the temptation also make a way of escape. Sometimes the way of escape is as simple as putting the plate down and walking out of the room.
Isaiah 40:31. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. This is the chorus. I wait on Him, I don't wait alone. The strength is not something you manufacture. You wake up, and it's there.
And it starts with knowing who you are. If you know you belong to Him, the offer loses its pull.
I am His, and He is mine
The chorus borrows its first line from the Song of Songs 2:16. My beloved is mine, and I am his. It is the language of belonging, not of performance.
The bridge spells that out. Not a tenant, not a guest. Not on trial, not on test. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. You are not who they said. You are not what you did. You are not the plate you nearly took. You are His.
When the song says I am rich, it means this kind of wealth. Ephesians 1:3 says we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Whatever the fast track offered, you already have more.
What the song is about
I Am is a gospel rap about walking away from a tempting shortcut and finding out who you are on the other side. It tells the story honestly. Some nights it's thin. But the strength comes back every morning, and the identity never changes. I am His.
I Am is one of the album's two gospel rap tracks. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.
A prayer for strength against temptation
Lord, You see the plate in my hand and the voice in my ear. Give me the strength to put it down and walk out of the room. I do not want to fight this by my own will. Renew my strength this morning, and remind me that I am Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I Am lyrics
IntroI am his
I am his
ChorusI am his and he is mine
I am strong
I am rich
I wait on him, I don't wait alone
And my strength is renewed
Renewed every morning
Verse 1The choice was very simple
live life scarce or live it ample
The devil didn't threaten me, he showed me a sample
Passed me the plate, said take a bite of the apple
He didn't come with horns, he came with a contract
Came with a smile and a fast track
Said nobody has to know the details
Said everybody's doing it, that's just how it scales
But I knew this thing was serious
Had to cut the ties, clip, clip, scissors
Because what rules you, first it feeds you
And what you feed in secret is the thing that leads you
So I put the plate down, I walked out the room
Left the fast track, took the long way home
And I won't lie to you, some nights it's thin
But I never forget who I am in him
ChorusI am his and he is mine
I am strong
I am rich
I wait on him, I don't wait alone
And my strength is renewed
Renewed every morning
Verse 2Somebody hearing this is holding the plate
Somebody's got the pen right over the date
And the voice in your ear sounds reasonable
That's how you know it's him, he's always reasonable
He won't ask for your soul on the first day
He'll ask for something small you can explain away
Then he comes back around for a little bit more
Till you can't recall what you said no to before
I'm not telling you this from a pulpit
I'm telling you because I nearly took it
I know the weight of that thing in your hand
And I know what it costs to put it back down
So hear me, the strength don't come from gritting your teeth
It comes in the morning, it comes underneath
Every day it's new, every day it's again
That's how I know who I am in him
ChorusI am his and he is mine
I am strong
I am rich
I wait on him, I don't wait alone
And my strength is renewed
Renewed every morning
BridgeI am his
And he is mine
Not a tenant, not a guest
Not on trial, not on test
I am not who they said
I am not what I did
I am not the plate I nearly took
I am his
And when the strength runs low
I don't manufacture it
I wake up
And it's there
ChorusI am his and he is mine
I am strong
I am rich
I wait on him, I don't wait alone
And my strength is renewed
Renewed every morning
OutroRenewed every morning
Renewed every morning
I am his
