More Than Conquerors

What Romans 8:37 really means, why I will not be moved, and the enemies who stumbled and fell.

Michael CU. Out now, and track 4 on the album Daalu.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

Romans 8:37, King James Version

What does more than conquerors mean?

A conqueror wins the battle. Someone who is more than a conqueror wins it so completely that the battle stops mattering. The enemy is not just beaten. The enemy is finished.

The phrase comes from Romans 8:37. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. Paul uses a single Greek word there that means something like overwhelmingly victorious. Not barely. Not on points. Overwhelmingly.

But look at the last four words. Through Him that loved us. The victory is real, but it is not ours. That is the whole point of this song. Not by my own hand. Not by my own name.

In the world ye shall have tribulation

The song opens with honesty. In the world there is tribulation. I won't stand here and pretend.

That is John 16:33, where Jesus tells His disciples plainly that trouble is coming. Then He adds, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. That is how the singer already knows how the story ends.

Romans 8, the same chapter as the title, lists the things Paul had faced. Tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword. And then he says, in all these things we are more than conquerors. Not after them. In them.

I will not be moved

Psalm 46:2 and 3. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though the mountains shake. Even if the world trembles. Should the mountains quake.

Psalm 16:8. I have set the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Zechariah 4:6. Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord. Not by my own hand.

They stumbled and fell

The bridge of this song is almost a quotation. Psalm 27:2 says, when the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

Notice what the singer does. Nothing. I did not lift a hand. I did not say a word. That is Exodus 14:14, said to Israel with Pharaoh's army behind them and the sea in front. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

The One who loves me answered for me. More than a conqueror, through Him that loved us.

What the song is about

More Than Conquerors is a song of victory that refuses to boast. It admits the fear and the nights when morning felt uncertain. It names the enemies and the trembling mountains. Then it declares a strength that was never its own. So when I say I'm strong, understand me. Somebody carried me.

More Than Conquerors is the album's declaration song. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.

A prayer of victory

Lord, there is trouble in this world, and I will not pretend there is not. But I know how my story ends. Fight for me where I cannot fight. Let every enemy that rises against me stumble and fall. I am more than a conqueror, not by my own hand, but through You who loved me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

More Than Conquerors lyrics

IntroMore than a conqueror
More than a conqueror

Verse 1In the world there is tribulation
I won't stand here and pretend
But I already know
How this story ends

Even if the world trembles
Even if the sun fails
Should the mountains quake
And my enemies surround me

PrechorusI will not be moved
I will not be moved

ChorusI am strong
I am powerful
I am more than a conqueror
I am more than a conqueror

Post chorusNot by my own hand
Not by my own name
I am more than a conqueror

Verse 2I have been afraid
I won't stand here and lie
There were nights I did not know
If I would see the morning

But something held me up
When I had nothing left
It was never my own strength
It was never mine at all

So when I say I'm strong
Understand me
Somebody carried me

ChorusI am strong
I am powerful
I am more than a conqueror
I am more than a conqueror

Post chorusNot by my own hand
Not by my own name
I am more than a conqueror

BridgeWhen they surrounded me
To devour me
When they had me cornered
With nowhere left to run

They stumbled
They fell
They stumbled
They fell

I did not lift a hand
I did not say a word
The One who loves me
Answered for me

So I overcome
I overcome

ChantMore than a conqueror
More than a conqueror
More than!
More than!
More than a conqueror

I am powerful
