Walk

For anyone who cannot see the road. What a lamp unto my feet really means, and why one step is enough.

Michael CU. Out now, and track 11 on the album Daalu.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:105, King James Version

I asked for a map. He gave me a lamp.

Most of us want the whole plan. Where am I going? How long will it take? What happens at the end? We knock on doors and they stay shut, and we tell God, just show me the road.

He rarely does. What He gives instead is enough light for the next step. And then the next one. That is the whole story of this song.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet

Psalm 119:105 says, Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. It is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, and it is easy to miss what it actually promises.

The lamps of that time were small clay oil lamps. They did not light up a valley. They gave enough light for the next few steps. A traveller at night held one low and watched where his feet went.

So the promise is not that you will see the mountain and the miles. It is that you will see where to put your foot. That is enough. Take the step, and the ground holds. Take another, and it holds again. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says we walk by faith, not by sight. This is what that looks like on an ordinary night.

He neither slumbers nor sleeps

The second verse of this song is about the nights we spend keeping watch over our own lives. Counting the hours. Guarding the house. Afraid that if we close our eyes, everything will fall apart.

Psalm 121:3 and 4. He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 127:1 and 2. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early and sit up late, for He giveth His beloved sleep.

Isaiah 40:28. The everlasting God fainteth not, neither is weary. He does not tire of the road.

So you can stop keeping watch. You can sleep. The road will still be there in the morning.

I can do all things

The chorus joins two promises. Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. And Matthew 28:20, the last words of Jesus in that gospel. Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.

The song is careful about the order. I will walk because You walk with me. The strength does not come first. His presence does.

What the song is about

Walk is a song for anyone who cannot see the way ahead. It remembers the closed doors and the sleepless nights, and the slow discovery that God gives light one step at a time. In the bridge it turns around and looks back at all the steps you thought you took alone. Then it speaks straight to whoever is still standing in the dark. You don't need the road. You need the step. The light is already at your feet.

Walk is the album's song for anyone who cannot see the way ahead. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.

A prayer for guidance

Lord, I cannot see the whole road, and I am tired of trying to. Give me enough light for the next step. Teach me to rest at night, knowing You never sleep. Walk with me, stay with me and stand with me, until the end of time. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Walk lyrics

IntroOne step
One more step

Verse 1I remember when I couldn't see the road
Every door I knocked on stayed closed
I asked Him for a map, I asked for the whole plan
And He gave me a lamp instead

And a lamp only shows you where to put your foot
Not the mountain, not the miles
Just the next place your foot can go
So I went

PrechorusI took one step
And the ground held
I took one more
And the ground held

ChorusI will walk
Because you walk with me
I will stay
Because you stay with me
I will stand
Because you stand with me
And I can do all things
Because you promised to be with me
Till the end of time

Verse 2There were nights I did the watching for myself
Counting the hours, guarding my own house
Afraid that if I closed my eyes
The whole thing would come down

Then I learned the One who holds me
Never once closed His eyes
He does not falter
He does not sleep
He does not tire of the road
He does not put the lamp down

So I stopped keeping watch
And I slept
And the road was still there in the morning

ChorusI will walk
Because you walk with me
I will stay
Because you stay with me
I will stand
Because you stand with me
And I can do all things
Because you promised to be with me
Till the end of time

BridgeLook behind you
Look at all those steps
You thought you took alone
Look at the road you made
You never saw the whole of it
You just kept going

And whoever's hearing this
Still standing in the dark
Still waiting for the whole thing to make sense

You don't need the road
You need the step
The light is already at your feet
Take it

Final chorusI will walk
Because you walk with me
I will stay
Because you stay with me
I will stand
Because you stand with me
And I can do all things
Because you promised to be with me
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
