In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:2, King James Version
When the cup is still in the cupboard
Grief lives in small things. A cup nobody uses. A number you cannot delete. A chair at the table that stays empty while everyone pretends not to look at it.
And then people come. They mean well. They say it gets easier. They say the person is in a better place. You nod. You even believe it. But you still want them here, and nobody seems to have a sentence for that.
This song is for that place. It does not try to fix your grief. It sits with you in it.
Can a Christian grieve?
Yes. Many of us were raised to think that crying at a burial means our faith is weak. That we should smile, sing loud and say God knows best. God does know best. But the Bible never asks you to pretend.
John 11:35. Jesus wept. He stood at the grave of His friend Lazarus, knowing He was about to raise him, and He still wept. If Jesus could cry at a graveside, so can you.
1 Thessalonians 4:13. Paul does not say do not grieve. He says do not grieve like people who have no hope. Grief and hope can sit in the same heart.
Psalm 34:18. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. Not near to the people who have it together. Near to you, now.
John 14:2 and 3. In my Father's house are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you. That is where the title of this song comes from. Somewhere a place is being kept. Save me a seat.
Revelation 21:4. One day God will wipe away every tear. Not today, maybe. But one day.
What the song is about
Save Me A Seat is a conversation with someone who is gone. It talks about the cup and the phone and the advice people give. Then it turns to God, honestly. I have sung about You in the storm and in the fire, and I meant it. But I don't know where to put this. So I am not going to pretend. I am just going to stand here.
It ends without a big resolution. Only a promise. I'm coming. Not yet. But I'm coming.
Save Me A Seat is track 22 on the album, and many listeners will find it at the hardest moment of their lives. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.
If your grief feels too heavy to carry alone, please tell someone. Your pastor, a friend, a counsellor. Grieving with others is not a lack of faith. It is how God sends His comfort.
A prayer for someone grieving
Lord, You see this empty chair and this heavy heart. I do not know what to do with this loss, so I bring it to You as it is. Hold the one I lost, and hold me too. Give me hope that does not deny my grief, and comfort that does not hurry me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Save Me A Seat lyrics
IntroSave me a seat
Verse 1Your cup is still in the cupboard
I can't move it
Somebody told me I should
I'm not going to
Your name is still in my phone
I call it sometimes
Just to hear it ringing
Where you used to be
ChorusSave me a seat
I'm coming, but not yet
Save me a seat
And keep the light on
I don't know what you can see from there
But I talk to you anyway
So save me a seat
Verse 2People keep telling me
That it gets easier
They mean well
They're not wrong, and it doesn't help
They say you're in a better place
I believe it
I do believe it
I still want you here
ChorusSave me a seat
I'm coming, but not yet
Save me a seat
And keep the light on
I don't know what you can see from there
But I talk to you anyway
So save me a seat
BridgeLord, I have sung about you
In the storm and in the fire
I have said you never falter
And I meant every word
But I don't know where to put this
I don't know what to do with my hands
So I'm not going to pretend
I'm just going to stand here
And if you're holding the one I lost
Hold me too
I can wait
I just can't do it quietly
Final chorusSave me a seat
I'm coming, but not yet
Save me a seat
And keep the light on
I'll find you
I don't know how, but I'll find you
So save me a seat
OutroI'm coming
Not yet
But I'm coming
