Like a Baby

For the one who carries everything. What it means to become like a little child, and to let God carry you.

Michael CU. Out now, and track 8 on the album Daalu.

For your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Matthew 6:8, King James Version

The one who carries everything

Every family has one. The one they call when it goes wrong. The one with a plan for every road and a backup for the plan. The one who pays the school fees, settles the quarrel, and never says he is tired.

Nobody asks that person who is carrying them. And usually, they never think to ask either. They just hold everything a little tighter and call it being strong.

This song is for that person. It is about the day you finally put it all down, and find that nothing fell.

Unless you become as little children

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus says something that has troubled strong people ever since. Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

He did not mean childish. He meant dependent. A baby does not count what is in the cupboard. A baby does not check the locks. A baby does not wonder whether there will be enough tomorrow. It eats, it sleeps, it grows, and when it falls, somebody picks it up again. Nobody sends it a bill.

David found the same peace in Psalm 131:2. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother. My soul is even as a weaned child. A quiet soul, held.

He knows what you need before you ask

The chorus of this song comes almost word for word from Matthew 6:8. Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him.

A few verses later Jesus tells us to take no thought for tomorrow, because our heavenly Father already knows. 1 Peter 5:7 says cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.

And the Bible uses this exact picture of God. In Deuteronomy 1:31, Moses reminds Israel that the Lord carried them through the wilderness as a man carries his son. Deuteronomy 33:27 says underneath are the everlasting arms. Isaiah 46:4 says, even to your old age I will carry you.

A man who can carry everything

The bridge of this song holds its hardest truth. A man who can carry everything never finds out that he was being carried the whole time.

Being strong is good. Being useful is good. But if you never put the weight down, you never learn who has been holding you. Sometimes faith looks like stopping. Letting somebody hold you. Being done with being impressive.

So the storm can do what it wants. Jesus slept through one in Mark 4. You can read that story on the page for Baba.

What the song is about

Like a Baby is a song about surrender for people who are used to being strong. It moves from the exhaustion of carrying everything, to the strange freedom of being carried, to a quiet prayer at the end. Take the weight. I just want to be held.

Like a Baby is the album's song of rest for people who are used to being strong. Daalu by Michael CU is out on 3 November 2026.

A prayer of surrender for the one who carries everything

Father, I have carried so much for so long. Today I put it down at Your feet. Teach me to rest in Your arms like a child. You know what I need before I ask, so I will stop counting and checking and worrying. Hold me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Like a Baby lyrics

IntroMmm
Like a baby

Verse 1I used to be the one who carried things
The one they called when it went wrong
I had a plan for every road
And a backup for the plan

Nobody ever asked me who was carrying me
And I never thought to ask
I just held it all a little tighter
And I called that being strong

PrechorusThen one day I put it down
And nothing fell

ChorusLike a baby
In my father's arms
I don't count what's in the cupboard
I don't check the locks
He knows what I need
Before I know to ask
So the storm can do what it wants
I'm like a baby

Verse 2Now a baby doesn't say thank you
Doesn't know what anything cost
Doesn't ask if there'll be enough tomorrow
It just eats and it sleeps and it grows

And nobody holds it against him
Nobody sends him a bill
Nobody says you should be doing more by now
They just pick him up again

PrechorusI'm learning how to be like that
It's taking me a while

ChorusLike a baby
In my father's arms
I don't count what's in the cupboard
I don't check the locks
He knows what I need
Before I know to ask
So the storm can do what it wants
I'm like a baby

BridgeIt's harder than it looks
To let somebody hold you
I had to unlearn my own hands
I had to stop being useful for a minute

Because a man who can carry everything
Never finds out
That he was being carried
The whole time

So take it
Take the weight
I'm done being impressive
I just want to be held

ChorusLike a baby
In my father's arms
I don't count what's in the cupboard
I don't check the locks
He knows what I need
Before I know to ask
So the storm can do what it wants
I'm like a baby
